Audi brings more of what's great to the RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 performance models

Monday, 04 December, 2023

  • The fastest and most powerful RS 6 and RS 7 models-to-date now produce 621 horsepower and sprint from 0-60 mph in just 3.3 seconds
  • Unique interior and exterior Audi Sport design elements added for greater differentiation over previous models
  • New Bronze edition limited to 125 units and only available in the U.S.
HERNDON, Va., June 27, 2023 – Today, Audi of America announces the fastest and most powerful RS 6 and RS 7 models to date – the RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 performance. The new models receive a number of dynamic improvements including an increase in power and torque, more precise self-locking differential, and more direct steering. Sound insulation inside the car has also been reduced allowing the song of the powerful 4.0-liter biturbo V8 to be heard more clearly, offering a more emotional driving experience.

Performance means more power and dynamics.

The latest RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 performance models stand as the epitome of dynamic and captivating offerings within the Audi Sport brand portfolio. Equipped with larger turbochargers enhancing the potent 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine, engineers have boosted the pressure, resulting in an extra 30 horsepower and 37 lb-ft of torque. With a formidable 621 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, both models can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 3.3 seconds (0.2 seconds quicker than their predecessors) and achieve a top track speed of 155 mph, extendable to 174 mph with the Bronze edition.

Audi Sport engineers have meticulously updated the fully mechanical self-locking center differential, making it more compact and lighter than its predecessor. Additionally, the RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 performance models benefit from refined software in the transmission control unit, ensuring faster shifting times. These enhancements translate to significantly improved driving dynamics, offering more precise cornering control with reduced understeer at handling limits. The engine control software has been fine-tuned to provide tighter shifts in "dynamic" Audi drive select mode, intensifying the emotional driving experience.

In an intentional move to provide customers with a heightened, visceral sound experience, Audi Sport has minimized sound insulation between the engine compartment, interior, and rear of the RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 performance models, emphasizing their "performance" designation. For those seeking an even more distinctive auditory experience, an optional RS sport exhaust is available, further enriching the sound of the robust 621 horsepower V8.

Exterior enhancements include standard RS exterior trim components finished in matte gray, distinguishing the new RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 performance from the previous model year. The models are now offered in eight exterior colors, including two new additions – Gerenadier Red metallic and Ascari Blue metallic.

The standard 21” 10-spoke star design cast aluminum wheels with 275/35 summer tires are complemented by three additional lightweight forged 22” milled cut wheel options. These wheels, each 5 kg or 11 lb lighter, contribute to reduced unsprung weight, enhancing handling in both models. The wheels are available as standalone options, including a 22” 5-Y-spoke design with a matte gray finish or as part of the optional Black optic package, featuring a 22” 5-Y-spoke design with a bi-color black finish. A separate Matte carbon package is also available with 22” 5-Y-spoke design wheels featuring a matte black finish. All three 22” wheels now come equipped with new summer performance Continental “Sport Contact 7” 285/30 tires, offering improved grip on both dry and wet roads and reducing understeer for more precise handling. The braking distance is also improved by as much as 2 meters with the new wheels and tires when braking from 62 mph to 0 mph on the track.

Internally, the RS design package plus is available in gray, red, and blue, offering a customizable interior experience. The RS design package in blue includes ocean blue seatbelts and a carbon twill structure inlay with blue accents on the dashboard. The gray and red RS design package plus features black seatbelts with matching color borders and a standard carbon twill structure inlay. The flat-bottomed Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, floor mats, and sides of the center console all feature package-color stitching. The front sport seats boast Valcona leather upholstery perforated with honeycomb contrast stitching and the RS logo in blue, gray, or red.

The standard 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus introduces new features to enhance the driving experience, including a blinking shift indicator in manual transmission mode and Launch Control with traffic light icons indicating the optimal acceleration moment. The Audi virtual cockpit plus also allows users to switch between black and white displays, with white gauges inspired by the instrument cluster of the first quattro GmbH car, the 1997 S6 plus. Further distinguishing the RS 6 Avant performance and RS 7 performance models is the LED puddle lamp graphic in the front door, projecting "RS performance" on the ground when the door is open.

For those seeking an extra touch of exclusivity, Audi offers the Bronze edition, limited to 125 units (75 RS 6 Avant performance and 50 RS 7 performance models). This edition boasts a distinctive Sebring Black crystal effect paint finish paired with matte neodymium gold 22” 5-Y-spoke wheels, inspired by motorsport aesthetics.

The Bronze edition presents an extensive list of standard equipment exclusive to the special edition:

Audi improves RS Q e-tron rally car for 2024 Dakar Rally with multiple innovations

Thursday, 30 November, 2023

Audi has once again elevated the performance of its RS Q e-tron rally car, gearing up for its third appearance at the Dakar Rally in January 2024. The cutting-edge electric drivetrain, featuring a high-voltage battery and energy converter, has undergone a series of innovative enhancements in five key areas. The driver crews, including Mattias Ekström/Emil Bergkvist, Stéphane Peterhansel/Edouard Boulanger, and Carlos Sainz/Lucas Cruz, will experience improvements in safety, reliability, comfort, performance, and maintenance efficiency.

With six stage victories and 22 podium results since 2022, the RS Q e-tron has proven its capabilities. Rolf Michl, Head of Audi Motorsport, emphasizes the goal of demonstrating consistent performance to compete for top positions. The analysis of previous outings identified areas for improvement, and the project's new Technical Director, Dr. Leonardo Pascali, spearheaded developments in five crucial aspects.

Safety measures have been heightened to address incidents from the 2023 Dakar Rally. Dr. Pascali and his team focused on reducing peak vertical acceleration during landings after jumps. Through adjustments to springs, dampers, and the chassis bump stop, load distribution has been optimized, ensuring better control of the platform. Foam in the seats has been enhanced to distribute loads over a more extended period, contributing to occupant safety. The carbon-fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) crash box at the front end is now longer, absorbing energy more effectively during frontal impacts.

Reliability enhancements concentrate on details, refining the RS Q e-tron's performance in tough conditions. Issues such as stone penetration between the rim bed, brake disc, and upright have been mitigated by new fastening elements, providing greater clearance. The use of more robust rims and stronger sidewalls on the tires enhances durability.

Comfort for drivers and co-drivers has been improved by optimizing acoustic shielding and cockpit sealing. A modified front bonnet helps repel mud and water, ensuring a cleaner windshield for better visibility.

Performance gains were achieved through comprehensive optimization, ranging from chassis and software to body and electric drivetrain. Adjustments to shock absorbers and springs refined the setup, while weight optimization in various components, including the rear bonnet and brake calipers, was undertaken. Regulatory changes have increased the electric motors' maximum output to 286 kW, enhancing competitiveness.

Maintenance efficiency has been a focal point, with practical solutions implemented to simplify daily maintenance during rally events. Modified bolted connections, improved tool holders, optimized filling cap devices, new locking solutions, and a shift to bolted connections contribute to quicker and more straightforward servicing.

Rolf Michl, expressing confidence in the team's preparation, emphasizes the creative solutions implemented by the engineering team. The improvements, incorporated since mid-2023, have undergone testing, ensuring readiness for the 2024 Dakar Rally.

Audi and Navistar Unveil Innovative Technology Aimed at Enhancing Safety During School Bus Stops

Monday, 27 November, 2023

Audi and Navistar Showcase Life-Saving Technology: Direct Car-to-Bus Communication for Safer School Transportation.

In a groundbreaking demonstration, Audi of America and Navistar highlight the transformative impact of connecting vehicles directly to their surroundings, potentially preventing accidents and safeguarding the lives of the 26 million children who commute on school buses daily in the United States. This initiative, leveraging Cellular Vehicle to Everything (C-V2X) technology, presents a promising stride toward enhancing road safety and securing a protected environment for students during their daily journeys to and from school.

The C-V2X direct communications technology employed in Audi vehicles and Navistar's IC Bus® school buses enables drivers to receive immediate alerts in the vehicle's cockpit, providing early notifications of upcoming school bus stops. Crucially, these alerts are delivered even when the school bus is not visible due to factors such as terrain obstacles or obscured views. Simultaneously, school bus drivers receive alerts about approaching vehicles during stops and warnings if a vehicle is approaching too swiftly to halt in time. This advanced communication empowers school bus drivers to make informed decisions, such as delaying door openings or cautioning children to remain on the curb, fostering an environment where drivers have additional time to prepare and respond, thereby contributing to the overall safety of school transportation.

The C-V2X technology facilitates direct communication between vehicles and school buses at an impressive rate of 10 times per second, covering a distance of up to 400 yards. This virtually eliminates latency concerns associated with traditional cell tower network communication. Each vehicle shares vital information, including location, speed, and direction, ensuring enhanced safety for all road users, especially in critical situations where every second matters.

Audi's successful implementation of direct communication technology extends beyond school zones, encompassing applications in construction areas, for cyclists, and even for the protection of construction workers. The versatility of this technology holds promise for future applications, such as aiding motorcyclists, emergency vehicles, and eventually pedestrians. This significant advancement in direct communication stands as a pivotal step toward realizing automated driving and, more importantly, has the potential to save lives.

Collaborating with technology partner Applied Information, Audi and Navistar have brought this demonstration to fruition. The commitment of these entities extends beyond the showcase, as they are dedicated to sharing the knowledge acquired and actively engaging with local, state, and national government officials to drive the widespread adoption of this life-saving technology.

New safety features for cyclists

Monday, 13 November, 2023

Auto, cycling, and tech visionaries unite to establish the Coalition for Cyclist Safety, centered on V2X deployments

In a groundbreaking collaboration, 19 leaders from the automotive, bicycle, and technology sectors have come together to propel the development and expansion of a comprehensive vehicle-to-everything (V2X) ecosystem. This initiative aims to enhance cyclist safety on North American roads by fostering communication among connected vehicles through cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology, potentially averting collisions and reducing accidents.

Recognizing the potential to address the more than 130,000 annual injuries suffered by cyclists on U.S. roadways, the Coalition for Cyclist Safety was officially launched in Washington, DC on October 23, 2023. Comprising leading innovators, the coalition commits to deploying critical components of the V2X roadmap to improve cyclist safety and reduce congestion.

The coalition's primary focus is to integrate bicycles into the evolving V2X communication ecosystem. Through the deployment of V2X-equipped cars, bicycles, and other road participants, mutual awareness can be established, potentially lowering the incidence of injuries resulting from crash situations.

Key founding members of the Coalition for Cyclist Safety include automotive giants Audi and Cariad, bicycle industry leaders such as Accell, BMC, and Shimano, as well as V2X technology contributors like Autotalks and Qualcomm Technologies. Telecommunication support is provided by Deutsche Telekom and TELUS.

To ensure a holistic approach, an Advisory Committee, including organizations such as ITS America and People for Bikes, will offer insights and guidance. The coalition aims to collaborate with various stakeholders, including regulators and infrastructure operators, to develop, implement, and deploy V2X solutions. This comprehensive approach seeks to make road traffic safer and more efficient for all participants.

Noteworthy comments from coalition members emphasize the commitment to deploying life-saving V2X technologies, with a specific focus on Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs) like cyclists and e-bike riders. Audi, for example, views C-V2X connectivity as an investment in the future of transportation, and Bosch eBike Systems is dedicated to ensuring the integration of bicycles into the V2X ecosystem.

As the coalition embarks on its work in the United States and Canada, with an initial emphasis on C-V2X technology, there are plans to explore extending joint industry approaches to Europe and other regions worldwide. The initiative aims to leverage the power of connected technologies to create safer roads for cyclists and motorists alike.

More on-demand features from Audi

Monday, 06 November, 2023

Automakers are continually seeking innovative ways to boost their profits, and one strategy gaining attention is the introduction of on-demand features and subscriptions. However, the response from consumers has been mixed. Audi, renowned for its technological advancements, has decided to expand its on-demand features, not primarily as a revenue-generating venture, but in response to customer demand.

At present, Audi's on-demand features are exclusive to its E-Tron and E-Tron Sportback models. However, the company intends to extend these offerings to a wider range of models in the future. This shift will allow vehicle owners to enhance their driving experience by adding new functions and features on an ad hoc basis after their initial purchase. The current selection of Audi's on-demand features includes an LED Matrix package that seamlessly switches between dipped and main beam, a light function package with captivating light animations during car locking and unlocking, and a semi-autonomous parking function that can locate a parking space and autonomously park the vehicle.

Audi's Technical boss, Oliver Hoffmann, expressed, "With our next generation of electronic architecture, we will bring more offers to 'function on demand,' and you will see year by year, we will bring new functions in the cars." He added, "A few years ago, there were ideas to generate more revenue on digitalization functions than by selling cars."

What sets Audi apart is the ease of integrating these on-demand features. Drivers can enhance their car's functionality directly through the myAudi app, eliminating the need for a visit to the dealer or any additional hardware installation.

This development contrasts with BMW's decision to stop charging extra fees for hardware-based functions in its cars due to low "customer acceptance." Nevertheless, Hoffmann remains confident that on-demand functionality will become "quite normal in the future," emphasizing the ever-evolving landscape of automotive customization.

However, some automakers, like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, faced backlash when introducing subscription-based products and services in their vehicles. Still, a survey by S&P Global Mobility this summer revealed that consumers are generally open to subscriptions when they offer access to new features and technologies. When provided with free trials or existing subscriptions on newer vehicles, 82 percent of the survey's respondents expressed their willingness to consider purchasing subscription-based services for their future vehicle purchases.

In a related move, Porsche, another brand under the Volkswagen Auto Group (VAG) portfolio, recently announced plans to integrate Google services into its upcoming vehicle generations. This integration will bring a wide range of Google products, including Google Maps, Google Assistant, and access to various apps through the Google Play Store.

A Unique Design Aesthetic The TT Roadster Final Edition is exclusively available as a Roadster model, painted in Audi's unique Goodwood Green Pearl Effect, reminiscent of the color that first graced the first-generation TT Roadster. This edition also introduces the S Line exterior, integrated with platinum gray matte exterior bumper trim and side trim elements, providing an elevated level of exclusivity. For an added touch of sophistication, a gray convertible top, previously seen in the 2019 TT Roadster 20th Anniversary edition, adorns the vehicle and can be raised or lowered in just 10 seconds while driving at speeds of up to 31 mph.

The interior of the TT Roadster Final Edition is draped in Palomino Brown leather, harking back to the classic baseball stitch leather of the first-generation TT. The extended leather package extends this theme to the door armrests and center console, with black leather covering the airbag cap and instrument cluster hood. Audi Exclusive Palomino Brown stitching enhances the steering wheel and gear selector boot, while Palomino Brown leather piping and stitching accent the floor mats. This combination enables the TT Roadster to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in as little as 5.5 seconds.

A Nod to History The name "TT" is a tribute to the legendary Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man, one of the oldest motorsport events globally, where Auto Union brands NSU and DKW achieved significant success with their motorcycles. NSU later adopted the "TT" nomenclature to honor their racing championship on the TT Prinz, a sporty small car.

In 1998, Audi introduced the TT Coupe to the world, followed by the Roadster model a year later. This Bauhaus-inspired design challenged conventional Audi aesthetics, with the TT name itself serving as a departure from the brand's typical naming conventions to highlight the novelty of the model line.

A Fond Farewell Over the years, the TT model line has been a technology leader for the brand, introducing several iconic design and technology innovations, including the electronically deployable rear spoiler, Audi virtual cockpit, and the first Audi with available OLED taillights.

The Audi TT's illustrious journey concludes with the 2023 model, marking the end of an iconic design era for the brand.

Available Now The Audi TT Roadster Final Edition is now available for purchase in the U.S. market, with an MSRP of $67,800, plus a $1,095 destination charge. Don't miss your chance to own a piece of Audi history.
